A warm welcome back to Neuroscience Graduate Student Amelia Harman, who after rotating with different labs and learning lots of new techniques in her first year of PhD studies officially joined the lab to conduct her PhD thesis, jointly co-supervised by Dr. Kate O'Connor-Giles and Dr. Karla Kaun. Amelia's postbaccalaureate studies with the O'Connor-Giles and Kaun labs focused on localizing calcium channel subunits in the Drosophila brain. Amelia is interested in how the molecular biology of synapses change with plasticity, and she will start her PhD studies looking at how alternative splicing of STAT impacts synapse composition and function in the adult Drosophila mushroom body, the premier learning and memory center of the insect brain.
